The Karinding is an ancient bamboo mouth harp from West Java, Indonesia, once known as Sundaland. Traditionally, rice farmers played the Karinding in the paddies, its vibrations keeping insects and pests away while blessing the fields with sound. Over time, it became a ceremonial instrument, performed during full moon and harvest gatherings, accompanying prayers and sacred mantras.
Today, only a small community of artisans in West Java still know how to make and play this rare instrument.
Playing the Karinding is a meditative practice in itself. Held firmly in the left hand, the instrument is tapped with the index finger to create vibrations. By using breath, shifting tongue positions, and opening the mouth, players discover a wide range of subtle tones and textures. It requires patience and practice, but the reward is a deeply grounding sound that connects you to tradition and spirit.
Each Karinding is handcrafted from treated bamboo to ensure durability and resonance. Every piece comes with its own bamboo box for safekeeping. The standard tuning is D in the middle octave, offering a pure and earthy tone.
